Is Middlebury or Boston College more fun for undergraduates?

Boston College will feel more fun for more undergrads, mainly because you get a full residential campus plus direct access to Boston. Students can do the usual campus social things, but they also have off-campus options for restaurants, concerts, internships, games, and weekend plans that do not depend entirely on the school creating the scene. That tends to make social life feel broader and less repetitive.

Middlebury has a beautiful, close-knit campus and a strong outdoors culture, but its location shapes student life in a much narrower way. A lot of the fun there revolves around the campus itself, organized events, friend groups, outdoor trips, ski culture, and small-college traditions. For students who love that kind of immersive bubble, it can be excellent, but it is less varied than what BC students can tap into during a normal week.

BC also usually has more of the classic school-spirit energy that many people associate with an active undergraduate experience. Division I sports, a larger student body, and the mix of campus traditions with city life give it a more visibly lively atmosphere. Even students who are not huge sports fans often benefit from the momentum that creates on weekends and around campus events.

Middlebury’s social scene is often described as more intimate, sometimes more insular, and more dependent on whether you click with the campus culture. That can make it either really rewarding or a little limiting. If by fun you mean constant variety, easier access to things happening off campus, and a more extroverted social environment, BC has the edge.
