Middlebury vs Boston College: which has better campus life?

For campus life alone, Middlebury usually feels more tightly knit, while Boston College tends to feel more varied and active because of its size and location. Middlebury’s rural Vermont setting means students spend much more of their time on campus, so weekends, traditions, outdoor activities, and student-run events often become the center of social life. Boston College has a strong campus community too, but because it sits right next to Boston, student life is split between campus traditions and everything the city offers.

Middlebury is often the place that feels more immersive. A lot of students describe it as a true residential college where people know each other well, campus traditions matter, and social life is concentrated in a smaller circle. If you like the idea of classmates eating together, showing up to the same events, going skiing or hiking, and building a strong community partly because there is not much off-campus distraction, Middlebury has a real advantage.

That said, Middlebury can also feel isolated if you want lots of spontaneous off-campus options. Weekend fun there often depends on what the college, clubs, friend groups, and the outdoors create. For some students that feels vibrant and close-knit; for others it can feel repetitive, especially in winter or if they do not connect with the outdoorsy culture.

Boston College fits students who want a more traditional campus community without giving up access to a city. BC has school spirit, active student organizations, major sports energy, and a recognizable campus identity, especially around football and other shared events. At the same time, students can leave campus for restaurants, concerts, internships, and neighborhoods around Boston, so weekends usually offer more variety.

The tradeoff is that Boston College can feel a little less all-in on campus because students have more directions to go. Some people love that flexibility. Others feel that a city-adjacent school naturally spreads social life out more than a place like Middlebury.
