Middlebury vs University of Richmond for campus life

The biggest practical tradeoff is setting: Middlebury’s campus life is shaped by a small, residential college in rural Vermont, while Richmond’s is shaped by a suburban campus with easier access to a real city. That difference affects almost everything about student social life, from what weekends look like to how much the community revolves around campus itself. In both places, students can be social and involved, but the day-to-day feel is noticeably different.

Middlebury tends to feel more immersive and all-in. Because it is more isolated, students spend a lot of time together on campus, and that can make it easier to build a close-knit social circle quickly. Weekends often center on dorm hangouts, student events, outdoor activities, performances, and club gatherings, with skiing, hiking, and trips into town playing a bigger role than off-campus nightlife.

Richmond usually feels a bit more balanced between campus and off-campus life. The campus itself is attractive and residential, so students still spend plenty of time there, but access to the city means weekends can include restaurants, concerts, internships, and exploring Richmond beyond the university. Socially, that can make the atmosphere feel a little less insular than Middlebury, though sometimes also a little less intensely communal.

For making friends, Middlebury often has the edge if you want a place where people are constantly around each other and campus life is the center of everything. Richmond can still be friendly and connected, but some of the social energy is more distributed across campus groups, Greek life, and the city. If you want everyday life to feel tightly woven into one campus community, Middlebury stands out; if you like the idea of a contained campus with more variety just outside the gates, Richmond is probably the more appealing choice.
