George Washington University vs Boston College for finance: which is better for breaking into finance careers?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between George Washington University and Boston College, and I want to study finance or something very close to it.

Both seem strong to me, but I’m trying to understand which school has the better reputation and recruiting path for finance careers.

For finance specifically, Boston College usually gives you the clearer edge for recruiting strength and reputation. Its Carroll School of Management is very well regarded, BC has a long-established alumni network in finance, and the school places especially well into Boston and has solid reach into New York.

Boston College tends to fit the student who wants a classic business-school path with a strong undergraduate finance identity. Carroll is a real advantage here because finance is not just adjacent to the school’s strengths, it is one of them. BC also benefits from a loyal alumni culture, and in finance that matters because referrals, informational interviews, and internship access often come through alumni channels.

George Washington fits a somewhat different student well. If you are excited by Washington, DC, want easy access to internships during the school year, and are open to finance careers tied to policy, government, consulting, economic analysis, or regulatory spaces, GW has real appeal.

For a student focused narrowly on breaking into high-finance recruiting, though, GW is usually a less direct route than BC. You can absolutely get there from GW, but it may require more self-directed networking and hustle, especially for the most structured recruiting channels. BC more often offers the kind of built-in finance brand recognition that makes the process smoother.

So the choice depends on the version of finance you mean, but if you mean the standard undergraduate target of front-office finance recruiting or a broad finance reputation, Boston College stands ahead. GW makes more sense for someone who wants finance in a DC ecosystem and values location-driven internships as much as the school’s business recruiting pipeline.
