George Washington University vs Georgetown University for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

I’m trying to decide between GW and Georgetown and I want to go into finance after college. Both seem like they have good access to D.C. and strong networking opportunities, but I’m not sure which one gives students a better path to internships and recruiting for finance.

I’m mainly interested in how each school is viewed by employers and how strong the alumni/networking support is for breaking into the field.

For finance careers, Georgetown usually has the stronger recruiting pull and alumni reach, especially for investment banking, private equity, and other highly competitive front-office paths.

GW makes more sense for the student who is proactive, entrepreneurial, and comfortable building opportunities with a little less built-in prestige. Its D.C. location is still a real advantage, and students can absolutely land solid internships in asset management, corporate finance, financial policy, consulting-adjacent roles, and finance positions tied to government or international institutions. GW can work very well for someone interested in the intersection of finance, policy, economics, and public-sector institutions.

On employer perception, Georgetown tends to open more doors automatically, while GW often requires more individual hustle to reach the same firms. That does not mean GW students cannot break in, but the path is less naturally paved, especially for the most selective finance recruiting tracks.

If you already know you want mainstream finance recruiting and want the most efficient platform for internships and post-grad hiring, Georgetown is the safer bet. GW becomes more compelling when cost, personal fit, or your interest in finance tied to D.C. institutions matters enough that you are comfortable doing more of the networking lift yourself.
