Which is better for international relations: George Washington University or Boston University?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and I’m interested in studying international relations. George Washington University and Boston University both seem like strong options, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for this major.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the stronger reputation and opportunities for someone who wants to study international relations.

For international relations, George Washington University usually has the edge in reputation and day-to-day opportunities. Its Elliott School is especially well known in IR, and GW’s location in Washington, DC puts students close to embassies, think tanks, federal agencies, NGOs, and policy internships during the school year. That proximity matters a lot for this field because networking, speakers, and part-time internships are often built into the student experience rather than saved for summer.

GW tends to fit the student who wants international relations to feel practical and policy-facing from the start. If you can picture yourself wanting classes that connect directly to diplomacy, security, development, or public policy, and you like the idea of being surrounded by students chasing internships in DC, GW is often the more natural home. It is one of those schools where the city is a major part of the academic experience, especially for political and international fields.

Boston University is still a strong option, especially for a student who wants international relations within a larger, more traditional university setting. BU’s Pardee School has a solid reputation, strong language and regional studies options, and access to a global city with plenty of academic and professional resources. It can be appealing if you want IR but also value a broader campus environment, lots of choices across disciplines, and a college experience that feels a bit less centered on Washington policy culture.

In terms of pure name recognition for international relations, GW is more closely associated with the field itself.

So if your question is which school is more widely seen as the standout for international relations, the answer is George Washington. BU becomes especially attractive when you want strong IR academics but prefer Boston, a broader university atmosphere, or more separation from the constant internship-and-politics intensity that defines GW.
