Is George Washington University worth it compared with Wake Forest University for undergraduates?

I’m trying to decide between George Washington University and Wake Forest, and I keep seeing both listed as strong options. From a student perspective, I’m mostly trying to understand whether one of them is actually worth the higher cost or if they end up feeling pretty similar in value.

I want to know how people think about the overall undergrad experience and return on investment when comparing these two schools.

Wake Forest is usually the better value for most undergraduates unless George Washington gives you a meaningful price advantage or you specifically want to build your college life around Washington, DC. The biggest difference is not prestige so much as what you are paying for: Wake offers a more traditional, residential undergraduate experience with very strong student engagement, while GW’s premium is often tied to location and access to internships in the city. For many students, those GW advantages are real, but they do not automatically translate into a better return on investment.

One major differentiator is campus culture. Wake Forest is known for a cohesive campus community, strong school spirit, and an undergraduate-focused environment where students often feel the university is built around the residential college experience. GW feels much more urban and decentralized, with students spread across DC and more of the social and professional life happening off campus. That can be exciting, but some students experience it as less tight-knit and less traditionally collegiate.

Another difference is how each school delivers opportunities. GW has exceptional access to internships, policy work, nonprofits, media, and government-connected experiences during the school year because of its location. Wake is not going to match that day-to-day DC access, but it tends to offer a more contained and supported undergraduate environment, with strong advising and a campus-centered rhythm that many students find easier to fully take advantage of. In practice, GW can be more rewarding for very proactive students who will use the city constantly.

Cost matters a lot in this comparison because both schools are expensive. If GW is clearly more expensive, many families decide the added cost is hard to justify unless the student has a direct reason to be in DC for politics, international affairs, public policy, journalism, or similar fields. If the prices are close, then the decision becomes more about whether you want Wake’s stronger campus community or GW’s built-in access to a major professional hub.
