What are the FSU college essay prompts for this application cycle?

I’ve been trying to get a head start on my college essays and I’m focusing on Florida State University right now. I checked their admissions website, but I’m getting mixed messages about whether there’s a specific prompt or if the Common App personal statement is enough.

Does anyone know what the FSU essay topics are this year? If you applied to FSU recently, did you write a separate essay for them or just use the main Common App essay? I want to make sure I’m covering all my bases because I really want to get this right.

Florida State University (FSU) currently requires the main Common Application personal statement as its primary essay component. This means you’ll choose one of the seven Common App prompts and submit that essay for FSU. There is no additional, school-specific supplemental essay prompt for FSU for the 2023-2024 application cycle (and this has remained consistent for several recent cycles).

If you’re applying directly through the FSU institutional application (not very common, but possible for in-state students), you would also respond to one broad personal statement prompt. However, using the Common App is the most typical option and only requires the main essay.

In your Common App essay, make sure to select a topic that authentically represents who you are and what matters to you. Since FSU isn’t asking for school-specific essays, it’s even more important to let your unique perspective and voice shine through. For example, if you’re passionate about environmental science and started a local recycling initiative, explore what motivated you, what you learned, and how it influenced your future goals.

It’s a good strategy to review FSU’s academic programs and campus culture, even if you won’t address them in a supplemental essay. This background knowledge can help you choose a Common App topic that aligns subtly with what FSU values. But to answer your main question: you only need the main Common App essay for FSU—no extra essays are required for most applicants.

Make sure to double-check the FSU Admissions website before you submit, but as of this cycle, you're all set with just the Common App personal statement.
