What is student life like at Dartmouth compared with Columbia in New York City?

I’m trying to figure out which environment would fit me better. Dartmouth seems more isolated and campus-focused, while Columbia is in the middle of New York City.

I’m interested in how that difference affects everyday student life, like social scene, stress level, and whether it feels easier to make friends and have a balanced college experience.

The biggest difference is that Dartmouth’s student life is much more campus-centered and communal, while Columbia’s is more urban, fast-paced, and spread between campus and New York City. Dartmouth is in Hanover, a small college town, so students spend a lot of time together on campus, which often makes it easier to build a tight social circle quickly. Columbia has a defined campus in Morningside Heights, but daily life is shaped by Manhattan, which means more independence, more off-campus options, and often a less all-in-one-campus feel.

At Dartmouth, the social scene is heavily tied to residential life, traditions, outdoors culture, and Greek life, which has historically played a visible role in weekend social life. Because there are fewer distractions off campus, people tend to show up for the same events, eat together, and know each other across activities. That can create a strong sense of belonging, but some students find the smaller, more enclosed environment limiting.

At Columbia, social life is more self-directed. There are plenty of student groups and campus events, but many students also spend time exploring the city, doing internships, seeing friends downtown, or just living a more independent routine. That can be exciting and energizing, especially if you like variety, but it can also feel less cohesive socially because not everyone is in the same place at the same time.

In terms of stress, both schools are demanding, but the feel is different. Columbia often feels more intense in a visibly competitive, city-driven way, with students balancing academics alongside the constant pull of New York. Dartmouth can still be rigorous, but many students describe the environment as more socially integrated and somewhat easier to balance because your academic and social life happen in the same community.
