What is social life like for freshmen at Dartmouth?
I’m a high school junior trying to get a feel for campus culture, and Dartmouth keeps coming up as a school with a really strong social scene. I’m especially curious about what freshman social life is actually like in terms of making friends, weekend plans, and how easy it is to feel included.
I want to understand the day-to-day vibe for first-years and whether the social life feels collaborative, party-focused, or a mix of both.

Freshman social life at Dartmouth is usually active, close-knit, and very residential. Because the school is relatively small, most first-years get to know a lot of people quickly through their dorm, orientation, and classes. Weekend life is visible and social, but for freshmen it is usually a mix of hanging out in dorms, going to campus events, joining clubs, and later exploring the fraternity and sorority scene from the outside or through open events.
A big factor is that Dartmouth has a strong live-on-campus culture, so students spend a lot of time together and friendships can form fast. The First-Year Trips program is especially important socially; many students say it gives them an immediate set of people they recognize when classes start. There is also a real emphasis on student organizations, outing club activities, performances, service groups, and house community events, so the social scene is not just one thing.
That said, Dartmouth does have a reputation for a strong party culture, and that is part of campus life. Greek life is influential in the broader social scene, and freshmen often experience that culture more indirectly at first. If you want a quieter or more outdoorsy social life, those options exist too, but you usually need to be a little intentional about finding your people.
The day-to-day vibe for first-years is generally collaborative academically and social on evenings and weekends. It can feel very inclusive if you engage with your dorm, trips group, and a few activities early, since the campus is small enough that repeated interactions happen naturally. Students who like a lively, communal environment often find Dartmouth especially appealing, while students who want a more anonymous or urban social scene sometimes find it less natural fit.
