What is Dartmouth campus life like during the winter?
I'm considering Dartmouth and I keep hearing that winter there is a huge part of the experience. I'm from a place that barely gets snow, so I'm trying to picture what daily life actually feels like once it gets really cold.
I'm mostly wondering how winter affects the social atmosphere, getting around campus, and whether students generally enjoy that season or just put up with it.

Winter is a real part of daily life at Dartmouth, but most students do more than just tolerate it. Hanover gets long stretches of cold weather and regular snow, yet the campus is compact and very walkable, so getting around is usually manageable with a good coat, boots, and layers. Socially, winter often makes campus feel more close-knit because students spend a lot of time together indoors and also take advantage of outdoor traditions.
A lot of student life shifts toward winter-specific activities. Dartmouth has a strong outing culture, and students often ski, snowboard, ice skate, hike, or go on cabin trips through the Dartmouth Outing Club. The annual Winter Carnival is one of the school’s most recognizable traditions, with events, performances, and a general sense that the season is something to lean into rather than avoid.
Day to day, the weather definitely affects your routine. You will be walking to class in snow and darkness for part of the term, and you need to be comfortable with cold mornings and shorter days. That said, residence halls, academic buildings, and the student center are all close enough that campus does not feel impossible to navigate, and snow removal is generally prompt.
