How does the social life at Columbia compare to UChicago for undergrads?

I’m trying to get a feel for what day-to-day student life is actually like at each school. I know both have strong academics, but I’ve heard their campus cultures can feel pretty different.

I’m especially curious about how easy it is to meet people, find a friend group, and have a social life without feeling like school takes over everything.

Columbia and UChicago both have active undergraduate social scenes, but they usually feel different in daily life. Columbia tends to feel more outward-facing and city-integrated, with students socializing through clubs, campus events, and New York itself. UChicago is often more campus-centered and house-based, with social life shaped more by residence hall communities and long-standing traditions.

At Columbia, it is generally easy to meet people because there are many student organizations, a dense campus, and constant activity in and around Morningside Heights. A lot of students spend time both on campus and off campus, so social life can be flexible and varied. The tradeoff is that the school can feel a bit less self-contained, and friend groups sometimes form around clubs, identity groups, classes, or shared city plans rather than one unified campus culture.

At UChicago, many undergrads find their first strong friend group through the house system in residence halls. That structure can make it easier to build community quickly, especially in the first year, and the university is known for traditions like Scav and house events that create a distinct campus culture. The downside is that the academic intensity is a real part of the atmosphere, and some students do feel that school occupies more of daily life than it might at Columbia.

If your question is where it is easier to have a social life without academics taking over everything, Columbia usually has that reputation more than UChicago. If your question is where it is easier to find a built-in undergraduate community, UChicago often has the edge because of the residential system.
