Is Boston College or Lehigh more prestigious to colleges and employers?

I’m trying to compare these two schools and keep seeing them mentioned as strong private universities. I know prestige can be subjective, but I want to understand how Boston College and Lehigh are generally perceived by colleges and employers.

I’m mainly asking because I’m deciding where to apply and want to know which name might carry more weight overall.

Boston College is generally seen as having broader national prestige and name recognition than Lehigh. BC tends to carry more immediate weight with the general public, many employers, and graduate admissions offices because of its larger national profile and its long-established alumni network in major East Coast cities. Lehigh is also well respected, but its reputation is often strongest in engineering, business, and certain regional employer circles.

If you mean overall brand name, Boston College usually has the edge. If you mean strength in specific fields, Lehigh can absolutely match or outperform BC in areas like engineering and some technical business paths. Employers usually care more about your major, internships, grades, and experience than a small prestige gap between two schools of this level.

For graduate or professional schools, both are considered serious, selective private universities. BC may be a bit more broadly recognizable across disciplines, while Lehigh can stand out more with people familiar with engineering and quantitative programs. In other words, BC often wins on general reputation, while Lehigh can be just as strong in targeted academic and recruiting contexts.

So if name recognition is the main factor, Boston College is usually perceived as more prestigious overall. But if your interests line up with Lehigh’s strongest programs, especially engineering or certain business areas, the difference in real-world outcomes may be small or even tilt toward Lehigh depending on the field.
