How important is the University of Chicago interview in the admissions process?

I’m applying to UChicago and trying to understand how much the interview actually matters compared with the rest of the application. I know some colleges treat interviews as optional or just informational, so I’m not sure how much weight UChicago puts on it.

I want to know whether getting an interview, or doing well in one, can significantly affect my chances of admission.

At UChicago, the interview is not one of the main drivers of an admissions decision. Your transcript, course rigor, essays, recommendations, and overall academic and personal fit matter much more, and UChicago does not require interviews for all applicants. In practice, a strong interview can help reinforce what is already in your application, but it usually does not outweigh weaker academics or essays.

If you do interview, the biggest value is that it can add texture to your application. A thoughtful conversation can confirm traits like enthusiasm for ideas, maturity, communication skills, and genuine interest in the school. It can also help if your application feels a little flat and the interview gives admissions one more reason to see you as a distinctive person rather than just a set of numbers and essays.

But even a very good interview is usually a supporting piece, not a game changer. It is more likely to help at the margins, such as strengthening an already competitive application, than to dramatically change your odds on its own. A poor interview can hurt somewhat if it raises concerns about preparation, sincerity, or interpersonal judgment, but one average interview is rarely fatal.
