How should I prepare for a University of Chicago interview?

I have a UChicago interview coming up, and I want to make a good impression without sounding over-rehearsed. I know the interview is usually conversational, but I’m not sure what topics or kinds of questions I should be ready for.

I’m a junior/senior trying to figure out how to talk about my interests, activities, and fit for the school in a natural way.

Prepare for a UChicago interview by focusing on clear, thoughtful conversation rather than polished speeches. UChicago interviews tend to reward curiosity, intellectual playfulness, and self-awareness, so it helps to be ready to talk about what genuinely excites you, how you think, and why the school’s academic culture fits you. The strongest impression usually comes from sounding engaged and specific, not from trying to sound overly perfect.

Be ready for the core topics almost every interviewer may touch on: why UChicago, why your intended academic interests, what you do outside class, and what kind of ideas or questions keep pulling your attention. For UChicago especially, your answer to why this school should go beyond rankings or “rigorous academics.” Mention specific things like the Core Curriculum, the emphasis on discussion-based learning, undergraduate research, or a distinctive major, institute, or campus publication that connects to your interests.

You should also prepare a few short stories that show how you think. For example, have one example of a class discussion, project, book, research idea, or extracurricular moment that reveals your curiosity or perspective. UChicago often likes students who enjoy wrestling with ideas, so it helps if you can explain not just what you studied or did, but why it mattered to you and what questions it raised.

Try practicing answers in themes, not scripts. Think in terms of 60 to 90 second responses so you do not sound memorized. Good questions to rehearse include: What are you excited to study? What is something you changed your mind about? What activity matters most to you and why? What is a conversation, article, or problem you have been thinking about lately?

Have a few smart questions for the interviewer too. Ask about classroom culture, student traditions, the residential experience, or how students explore interests across disciplines. Questions that show real curiosity about student life and academics usually land better than questions whose answers are easy to find on the website.

On the day of the interview, aim for warm, engaged, and reflective. Listen carefully, answer directly, and let your personality come through. A thoughtful pause is better than rushing into a rehearsed answer, and enthusiasm for ideas usually plays very well at UChicago.
