What are some common University of Chicago interview questions?

I’m getting ready for a UChicago interview and want to know what kinds of questions students usually get asked. I know interviews can be pretty informal, but I’d like to have a sense of the themes so I can think through my answers.

I’m mainly trying to prepare for the conversation without sounding overly rehearsed.

UChicago interviews usually focus less on trick questions and more on how you think, what genuinely interests you, and whether you can carry an engaging conversation. Common themes include why UChicago, what excites you academically, how you spend your time outside class, and what kind of community you want in college. The interview tends to be conversational, so strong preparation means having clear examples and ideas, not memorized speeches.

Questions students often get include: Tell me about yourself. Why are you interested in UChicago? What academic subjects are you most drawn to, and why? What have you read lately that you enjoyed? What is something you have changed your mind about? What do you do for fun outside of school? Tell me about an activity or project that matters to you. What kind of discussions energize you? What are you looking for in a college community?

Because UChicago values intellectual curiosity, interviewers may also ask open-ended questions that reveal how you think. For example, they might ask about a book, article, class topic, or idea you found interesting and want to explore further. They may also ask about a challenge, but usually the more useful answer is one that shows reflection and growth rather than just describing a hard situation.

To avoid sounding rehearsed, do not script full answers. Instead, jot down a few key points for each theme: academic interests, one or two meaningful extracurriculars, a recent intellectual interest, why UChicago, and what you hope to contribute to campus. That usually leads to answers that sound more relaxed, specific, and memorable.
