How does choosing a minor work at the University of Chicago?

I’m a high school senior looking at UChicago, and I keep seeing that students can major in one area and minor in another. I’m trying to understand how formal the minor is and whether you have to declare it early or if it’s something you can decide later.

I want to know how the minor choice fits into the overall course planning process so I can tell whether it would be realistic for me to pair it with my main area of study.

At the University of Chicago, a minor is a formal undergraduate program that you add alongside your major, but you usually do not need to decide on it early in high school or even right when you arrive. Most students explore through the Core and introductory courses first, then declare majors and minors later through their academic division or department. In practice, a minor is realistic for many students because UChicago’s curriculum is built around planning a major plus the Core, and minors are typically completed through a defined set of courses.

The exact rules depend on the department offering the minor. You complete the required courses, and the minor is recorded on your transcript if you finish it successfully.

You typically declare a minor after you have a better sense of your academic direction, not before enrolling. The process usually involves meeting with your college adviser and, in some cases, getting departmental approval or submitting a form.

For course planning, the main question is whether your major leaves enough elective room. UChicago’s Core takes up a meaningful part of the first two years, so pairing a major with a minor is often very doable, but it depends on how demanding the major is. A student in a highly structured major may need tighter planning than someone in a more flexible major.
