How should I choose a minor at the University of Chicago if I’m not sure what I want to study yet?

I’m a high school senior trying to understand how minors work at UChicago because I’m interested in a few different subjects but I don’t know what I’d want to commit to yet.

I’ve heard people say a minor can help you explore an area without taking over your whole schedule, so I’m trying to figure out how students usually decide on one.

At UChicago, you do not need to decide on a minor before you enroll, and most students figure it out after taking classes. Minors are usually a flexible way to explore a second interest without the larger course load of a major, and at UChicago that decision often happens after the Core and a few introductory courses show you what you actually enjoy. In practice, students usually choose a minor because it complements their major, supports a career interest, or gives structure to a subject they were already taking classes in.

A good way to think about it is to wait until you have real course experience. UChicago’s Core Curriculum already exposes you to multiple fields, so many students discover a minor through a class they took to fulfill a Core requirement or just out of curiosity. You are not expected to arrive with a fixed academic plan, and that is especially true at a school built around broad intellectual exploration.

Once on campus, the practical test is simple: if you keep choosing classes in one area even when you do not have to, that subject may be a good minor. If you like the topic but do not want the full depth of a major, a minor can be the right middle ground. If your interests stay scattered, it is also completely fine not to minor at all, since a minor is optional and not something every UChicago student does.

When deciding, look at the actual requirements for the minor you are considering. Some minors are fairly manageable, while others can be harder to fit around a demanding major, study abroad, research, or other commitments.
