How does computer science advising work at the University of Chicago for undergraduates?

I’m a high school student considering UChicago and I’m trying to understand what support CS majors actually get once they’re there. I know some schools have really structured advising, while others are more self-directed.

I’m mainly trying to figure out how organized the advising is for choosing CS classes and planning a path through the major.

UChicago’s undergraduate CS advising is fairly structured, not just sink-or-swim. CS majors are supported through a combination of College academic advising and department-specific advising, so you usually have both a general adviser for overall degree planning and faculty or departmental guidance for the major itself. The CS major also has a clear set of requirements and published course pathways, which makes planning more organized than at schools where students have to piece everything together on their own.

In practice, students typically use the department’s major requirements, sample schedules, and course sequencing guidance to decide when to take core classes like introductory programming, systems, theory, and electives. Because many CS courses build on each other, the department’s structure matters, and UChicago does give students a defined framework for how to move through the major.

There is also support during course registration and major declaration. Students can get help figuring out prerequisites, whether they are starting in the intro sequence or placing into more advanced work, and how to balance CS with the Core Curriculum, which is a major consideration at UChicago. Since the College has a strong general education program, good advising is important simply because your schedule has to fit both the Core and the major.

One thing to know is that UChicago is organized, but it still expects students to be proactive. Advising is available and the major is clearly mapped, but students who do best usually check in early about sequencing, research interests, and long-term plans like study abroad or advanced electives.
