What internship opportunities does the University of Chicago offer for undergraduate students?

I’m a high school student looking at UChicago and trying to understand what kinds of internships are available once you’re there. I’ve heard the school has a lot of research and career resources, but I’m not sure what that looks like in practice.

I’m mainly trying to understand the types of internship opportunities students can usually access through the university.

UChicago undergraduates have access to a wide range of internships through both the university and employers that actively recruit on campus. In practice, that includes paid summer internships, academic-year internships in Chicago, research positions with faculty, internships tied to public policy and civic work, and funding programs that support students taking lower-paid opportunities. A lot of this runs through the Career Advancement office, the college’s research programs, and UChicago’s location in Hyde Park near downtown Chicago.

One major category is research. Undergraduates can work with faculty across areas like biology, economics, computer science, public policy, and the social sciences, often through structured summer research programs or direct faculty labs. UChicago is especially strong here because undergraduate research is a normal part of the culture, not something limited to seniors.

Another big area is career-focused internships through Career Advancement. Students commonly find opportunities in consulting, finance, tech, nonprofits, healthcare, media, education, and government. The university hosts job and internship postings, employer events, career treks, interview support, and on-campus recruiting, which helps students connect with organizations in Chicago, New York, DC, and beyond.

There are also school-specific and institute-linked options. Students interested in public policy, law, urban issues, or government often use opportunities connected to places like the Harris School, the Institute of Politics, or civic organizations in Chicago. For science and medicine, students may intern in hospitals, labs, or research institutes affiliated with the university.

Funding is an important piece too. UChicago offers internship funding and summer grants that can help students pursue public interest, research, or lower-paid roles that might otherwise be hard to take. So the university does not just list internships, it also often helps make them financially possible.
