What is the nursing program path at Louisiana State University?

I’m a high school student looking at LSU and trying to understand how someone actually gets into the nursing track there. I know some schools have a direct-admit program and others require you to apply to the nursing major later.

I just want to know what the usual path is at LSU for becoming a nursing student and eventually earning the BSN.

At LSU, the usual path is not direct admission to a four-year BSN on the Baton Rouge campus. Students typically start at LSU in a pre-nursing or intended health-related track, complete the required prerequisite courses, and then apply separately to LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In other words, getting into LSU as a freshman does not automatically place you in the clinical nursing major.

LSU Baton Rouge does not house the traditional BSN nursing school the way some universities do. The BSN is offered through LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing, and applicants usually need to finish specific science and general education prerequisites before entering the professional nursing curriculum.

A common route is to spend the first one to two years completing prerequisites, keep a strong college GPA, and then apply to the nursing school once eligible. Admission to the professional nursing phase is selective, so grades in the prerequisite sciences matter a lot. Some students complete all prerequisites at LSU Baton Rouge, while others may transfer from another college before applying.

If your goal is a BSN through the LSU system, think of it as a two-step process: first gain admission to LSU or another college for the prerequisite coursework, then apply to LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing for the nursing major itself. That is the standard path rather than a freshman direct-admit nursing track.
