Is it a good idea to apply to Louisiana State University as an undeclared major if I’m not sure what I want to study yet?

I’m a high school junior/senior trying to narrow down my college list, and LSU is one of the schools I’m considering. I’m not fully set on a major yet, so I’m wondering whether applying as undeclared is a reasonable choice there.

I want to know if starting undeclared at LSU is a common or smart path for students who are still deciding.

Yes, applying to LSU as undeclared can be a reasonable choice if you are genuinely unsure what you want to study. LSU does allow students to begin in a not-yet-decided path, and that is a fairly normal option for students who want time to explore courses before committing. It can work especially well if you are choosing among several broad areas rather than feeling locked into one very specific program.

That said, whether it is the smartest path depends on what majors you are considering. At LSU, some programs are more structured or selective, and switching into them later can be less simple than changing into a less restricted major.

If your uncertainty is between relatively flexible fields, undeclared is usually fine. You would have room to take core classes, meet with advisors, and figure out what fits before declaring. For many students, that is a practical way to avoid rushing into a major that they may quickly want to leave.

If you already suspect you want a highly structured major, applying directly to that college may be better than entering undeclared. Starting in the intended area can make course planning easier and help you avoid delays if the program has prerequisite chains.

Before applying, look closely at the LSU majors you are most likely to pursue and check whether they have special admission expectations or first-year course sequences.
