How important is course rigor for University of Hawaii admissions?
I’m a high school junior trying to figure out how much the University of Hawaii cares about the difficulty of my classes versus just my GPA. I’ve been deciding whether to take more AP and honors courses or keep my schedule more manageable so I can maintain stronger grades.
I want to understand how much course rigor matters in their admissions review so I can plan my senior year better.

Course rigor does matter for University of Hawaii admissions, but it usually is not treated as more important than having solid grades in a strong college-prep schedule. For UH campuses, especially UH Manoa, admissions focuses heavily on whether you complete the required college preparatory courses and how well you perform in them. In practice, a student with strong grades in a reasonably challenging schedule is often in a better position than a student who overloads on APs and lets grades slip.
Taking honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment can still help show academic readiness, especially if those courses connect to your intended major.
A good rule for senior year is to take the most challenging schedule you can handle well. If you can earn strong grades in a few AP or honors classes without hurting the rest of your transcript, that is usually the better choice. If adding too much rigor would noticeably lower your GPA, protecting your grades while still showing steady academic challenge is the smarter move.
For example, engineering or pre-health applicants benefit from taking higher-level math and science if available. But for general admission, UH is usually looking for evidence that you challenged yourself appropriately and succeeded, not that you took every hardest class offered.
