What course rigor does Tsinghua University expect from international applicants?

I’m a high school student planning ahead and looking at Tsinghua University. My school offers AP/IB-style advanced classes, and I’m trying to understand how much course rigor matters in admission.

I want to know what kind of academic challenge Tsinghua generally expects from international applicants.

Tsinghua University generally expects international applicants to have a very strong academic record in the most challenging curriculum reasonably available at their school. If your school offers AP, IB, A-Level, or similarly advanced courses, taking a solid number of them usually helps show preparation for Tsinghua’s academic level. They are especially likely to care about strength in core subjects tied to your intended major, such as higher-level math and science for engineering or quantitative programs.

Tsinghua does not usually publish a simple minimum like “you must take X APs” for all international applicants, so rigor is judged in context. What matters most is that your transcript shows consistent excellence and that you did not avoid difficult classes that were available to you. For IB, strong Higher Level choices are a good signal. For AP, doing well in advanced courses like Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, or advanced humanities can help depending on your field.

For highly academic universities like Tsinghua, course rigor matters because it helps prove you can handle a demanding classroom environment. A student aiming for STEM programs should ideally show advanced math through calculus and serious lab science coursework when possible. For humanities or social sciences, rigor still matters, but the strongest profile usually includes advanced writing, literature, history, economics, or language coursework alongside solid math.

If your school limits how many advanced classes students can take, that usually is considered in context. The key is to take a challenging schedule each year without a sudden drop in difficulty in junior or senior year.
