How do I list an independent study on the Common App activities section?

I did an independent study outside of a regular class as part of my high school work, and I want to make sure I list it correctly on the Common App.

I’m not sure whether it belongs in the activities section, honors section, or somewhere else, and I want to describe it in a way that makes sense to colleges.

List an independent study in the Common App Activities section if it took meaningful time outside your normal coursework and involved sustained work, research, or a final product. The Honors section is usually for awards or formal recognitions, not for the study itself. If the independent study appears on your transcript as a course, colleges will already see that there, but you can still include it as an activity when the work went beyond a standard class experience.

A good way to enter it is under the activity type closest to what you actually did, often “Academic” or sometimes “Research.” In the position/leadership field, use a clear label like “Independent Study Student,” “Independent Researcher,” or the specific role, such as “Independent Study in Environmental Policy.” Then use the description box to explain the topic, what you produced, and any concrete outcome.

Keep the description specific and action-focused. Mention who supervised it if relevant, the central question or subject, the methods you used, and the result: paper, presentation, portfolio, experiment, publication, or curriculum project. For example: “Designed semester-long independent study on urban heat islands; analyzed local temperature data, reviewed scientific literature, and presented findings to science department.”

If you earned an award, publication, or special recognition from the project, that separate recognition can go in Honors. If the project was especially important to your academic direction, you can also add brief context in the Additional Information section, especially if your school rarely offers independent studies or if this replaced a traditional class.

The main goal is clarity: colleges should quickly understand that this was a serious, self-directed academic commitment, not just extra reading on your own.
