How should I choose which awards to list in the Common App honors section?

I’m a junior putting together my Common App and I’m not sure what belongs in the honors section versus what is too small or not impressive enough. I have a mix of school awards, academic honors, and a few club recognitions, but I only get a limited number of spots.

I want to make the strongest possible list without wasting space on things that admissions officers would not really value.

Choose the five honors that are most selective, most relevant to academics, and easiest to understand at a glance. In the Common App honors section, strong picks usually include national, state, regional, or clearly competitive school-level academic awards, while minor participation-based recognitions usually are not worth a slot.

A good way to rank your awards is by asking four questions: how selective was it, what level was it earned at, how recent is it, and does it support the academic story your application already tells. National Merit recognition, AP Scholar, state science fair placement, a school academic department award, or placing in a recognized academic competition usually fit well. A generic club certificate, attendance award, or "member of the month" type recognition usually does not.

School awards can absolutely belong there if they are meaningful. For example, "Top French Student," "History Department Award," or "Highest Honor Roll" can be worth listing, especially if you do not have five stronger outside honors. Admissions readers know not every student has access to big national competitions, so a strong school-based award is better than leaving the section half empty.

Try to use the limited space strategically. Put the strongest and most widely recognizable honors first, and write them clearly with the level attached, such as "National Merit Commended Student, National" or "Principal's Award for Excellence in Mathematics, School." If a club recognition was genuinely selective, like "Best Delegate" at a major Model UN conference or first place in a debate tournament, that can count too, but make sure the title signals that it was an earned distinction, not just membership.

A simple rule: list awards that show excellence, not just involvement.
