How do I check the status of my college deferral update?
I was deferred by one of the colleges I applied to, and I’m trying to figure out how deferral updates usually work. I’m not sure whether the school sends another decision by email, updates the applicant portal, or expects students to wait until a later round.
I just want to understand the normal way colleges communicate a deferral update so I know where to look and what to expect.

Colleges usually communicate a deferral update through your applicant portal, with an email or text alert telling you to log in and view the new decision. In most cases, the actual decision is not fully included in the email itself. If you were deferred from an Early Action or Early Decision round, the next update typically comes when Regular Decision results are released unless the college says it has a separate review timeline.
The first place to check is the college’s admissions portal and any messages in its checklist or status update section. Many colleges post a note after a deferral explaining what happens next, whether they want a midyear report, an optional letter of continued interest, or no additional materials at all. If the portal says your application has been moved to Regular Decision, that usually means you will wait until that round’s notification date.
Your email still matters because schools often send reminders about missing materials, midyear grades, or the date decisions will be released. Make sure to check spam, promotions, and the email account you used on the application. Some colleges also list decision release dates on their admissions website, which is often more reliable than guessing based on past years.
If there is no update in the portal and no email, that usually just means the school is still reviewing your application. A deferral is not a second decision by itself, so you often will not see anything new for weeks or months. The clearest signs to watch for are a portal status change, a message requesting new materials, or an admissions email announcing that decisions are available.
