What should I do after a University of San Diego deferral to improve my chances in regular decision?

I was deferred by the University of San Diego and I want to make sure I handle the next steps correctly. I’m trying to figure out what I can do between now and the regular decision round to show continued interest without overdoing it.

I’m mostly looking for the best general strategy for a deferral, since I still want to be a strong applicant if they review my file again.

After a University of San Diego deferral, the best move is to send a concise letter of continued interest, update USD with any meaningful new achievements or stronger grades, and make sure the rest of your application stays polished. The goal is to show that USD remains a top choice and that your candidacy has gotten stronger since you applied.

Your letter should do three things: clearly state that you want to remain under consideration, briefly explain why USD is still a strong fit for you, and share concrete updates since submission. Good updates include first semester or quarter grades, a new leadership role, a significant award, a completed project, or a deeper commitment in work, service, research, or extracurriculars. Keep it specific and short, usually about one page or less.

For the fit portion, make it USD-specific rather than generic. Mention particular academic programs, values, or campus opportunities that connect to your goals, such as the university’s emphasis on undergraduate teaching, community engagement, or a program you would realistically pursue. That reads much stronger than simply saying you love the campus or location.

If your school counselor can send midyear grades or a brief note confirming continued strong performance, that can help too. Beyond that, avoid flooding the admissions office with extra recommendations, multiple follow-up emails, or casual check-ins unless USD specifically invites more material.

Also make sure you open and respond to any USD applicant portal requests promptly. If they offer optional updates through the portal, use that channel first.

If nothing significant has changed, it is still worth sending a short note reaffirming interest and fit, but the biggest factor is showing continued strength in school.
