How do I write a waitlist update email to the University of Chicago?

I was waitlisted at UChicago and want to send a strong update email without sounding repetitive or pushy.

I have a few new accomplishments and some continued interest in the school, but I am not sure what should actually go in the email or how long it should be.

Keep the UChicago waitlist update email short, specific, and genuinely informative. A strong update usually does three things: briefly thanks the admissions office, shares meaningful new developments since you applied, and explains why UChicago is still a strong fit in a way that goes beyond generic praise.

For UChicago, the most useful “continued interest” language is specific and intellectual. Instead of saying the school is prestigious or that you love the campus, mention something concrete such as the Core Curriculum, a program, a student organization, research, a class, or the school’s emphasis on inquiry and discussion, but only if it clearly connects to what you would actually pursue there.

Your updates should be real additions, not a rehash of your original application. Good items include improved grades, a major award, a leadership role, a completed project, a publication, a performance, a competition result, new service impact, or a deeper commitment to an academic interest. If one update is especially significant, give one sentence of context about why it matters.

A simple structure works well: one short opening paragraph stating that you remain very interested in UChicago and are writing to share updates; one middle paragraph with your new accomplishments; and one short closing paragraph connecting those updates to UChicago. If UChicago is truly your first choice and you would attend if admitted, you can say that clearly. Only say it if it is fully true.

Keep the tone warm and confident, not dramatic. Do not apologize, repeat your whole story, send a long love letter to the school, or pile on compliments. Also avoid sending too many emails. One solid update is much better than frequent small check-ins.

A line like this is the right level of directness: “Since submitting my application, I was selected as captain of the debate team, completed an independent research project on urban heat islands, and raised my AP Calculus grade to an A. These experiences have strengthened my interest in UChicago’s rigorous, discussion-driven academic environment, especially the chance to explore environmental study through the Core and interdisciplinary coursework.”

Your subject line can be simple: “Waitlist Update - Full Name - Application ID.”
