What are the personal essay prompts for Georgia College and how should I approach them?

After looking at Georgia College as one of my top choices, I’m a little confused about what exactly they want for the personal essay part of their application. Are there specific prompts that I have to pick from, or is it just a general personal statement like the Common App one? If anyone applied last year and remembers what the topics were or how you decided on what angle or story to tell, I’d really appreciate your advice.

I’m wondering if Georgia College wants something uniquely related to Georgia, or more about the individual applicant. My biggest challenge is figuring out how personal or creative to get with this essay, since my strengths are more in storytelling but I also want to stay on topic. Anyone have tips or examples (without copying)? Would love to hear how others navigated writing this essay!

Georgia College uses the Common App for their application, which means you’ll respond to one of the Common App personal essay prompts rather than a school-specific question. These prompts are designed to give students flexibility, so you can choose the one that best fits your experiences and writing style.

The Common App personal essay prompts include a range of options, such as reflecting on a challenge you’ve overcome, describing a moment of personal growth, recounting a time you questioned an idea or belief, or sharing a story that highlights your unique background or interests. The current set of prompts changes slightly each year, but they always aim to give you room to showcase who you are beyond test scores and grades.

Since Georgia College doesn’t require a Georgia-specific or highly tailored topic, you should focus on telling a genuine story about yourself. Use your strengths as a storyteller to make your essay engaging and memorable, but be sure your narrative reveals something significant about your character, values, or aspirations.

For example, if you’re drawn to creative storytelling, you could structure your essay around a particularly meaningful moment or turning point in your life and weave in reflection about what you learned. Instead of a generic retelling of an experience, focus on a specific detail that illustrates your growth or perspective. For instance, rather than broadly sharing your love for reading, you might write about how a single book changed the way you view the world, and connect that to your academic or extracurricular passions.

There’s plenty of room for creativity, but stay focused on your personal growth and your authentic voice. Avoid overly generic stories or clichés unless you can present them in a distinctly original way. If your storytelling can clearly convey who you are, what matters to you, and how you approach challenges or opportunities, you’ll be right on track.

Reach out to Georgia College admissions directly or check their website in case any special prompts are added for this application cycle, but as of now, the Common App essay should be your focus. Good luck, and use your storytelling skills to make your application stand out!
