What are the best letters of recommendation tips for UVA applications?
I’m starting my college application list and UVA is one of the schools I’m seriously considering. I know recommendation letters can matter a lot, but I’m not sure what kinds of teachers or experiences make a letter stronger for UVA.
I want to make sure I ask the right people and give them enough context so the letters actually help my application.

For UVA, the best recommendation letters usually come from teachers in core academic subjects who know you well and can describe how you think, contribute in class, and handle challenging work. If you are applying to a particular school within UVA, it also helps when at least one recommender can speak to academic strengths that fit that area.
A good rule is to ask 11th grade or 12th grade teachers in classes like English, math, science, social studies, or foreign language, especially if they saw you participate, improve, lead discussions, or produce thoughtful work. UVA values academic engagement, so letters that show intellectual curiosity, initiative, and character in a classroom setting are especially useful. A teacher who can say how you approached ideas, collaborated with classmates, or responded to feedback will help more than one who just says you got an A.
When you ask, give the teacher a short, organized packet or email with your resume, activities, intended major if you have one, and specific things you hope they might touch on. For example, you might mention a research project, a discussion-based class where you contributed often, or a time you showed persistence. This is not about scripting the letter. It is about reminding them of concrete moments they can use.
If you have the option to add an additional recommender, only do it if that person adds something new, such as community impact, leadership, or a major commitment outside school. The strongest UVA recommendation set usually feels academically credible, personally specific, and consistent with the rest of your application.
