How should I choose and ask for a letter of recommendation for UVA?

I'm a junior starting to think about college applications, and UVA is one of the schools I'm interested in. I know recommendation letters can matter a lot, but I'm not sure what makes a strong choice for UVA specifically.

I want to ask a teacher who knows me well, but I’m not sure what kind of person or class would make the best recommendation come from a student’s perspective.

From a student perspective, the strongest choice is not just the teacher from the class where you got the highest grade. It is the one who has seen how you handle discussion, writing, problem-solving, curiosity, improvement, or leadership among peers. A teacher who can say, for example, that you ask unusually thoughtful questions, help move group work forward, or bounce back after tough feedback will help UVA picture you in their classrooms.

If you are deciding between two teachers, pick the one who can be more specific. Specificity matters more than subject prestige. A detailed letter from a history teacher who knows your voice and growth is usually better than a generic letter from an AP science teacher who only knows you as a quiet top student.

When you ask, do it early and in person if possible. Ask directly whether they feel they can write you a strong letter of recommendation. That wording helps because it gives them room to decline if they cannot be enthusiastic.

After they say yes, give them a short brag sheet with your resume, activities, intended major if you have one, and a few concrete reminders from their class. Include specific moments they may remember, such as a research project, a paper, a presentation, or how you contributed to class. That makes it easier for them to write a letter that sounds personal rather than recycled.
