What are the best tips for an admitted UVA student before starting freshman year?

I just got admitted to UVA and I’m trying to get a better sense of how to prepare before I go. I’m a little nervous about adjusting to college life and want to make sure I start off on the right foot.

I’m mostly looking for practical advice from people who have been through the transition already.

Start with the practical basics: sign up for orientation as early as you can, check your UVA email regularly, and learn how course enrollment works before your first advising appointment. At UVA, a lot of important first-year logistics come through official university systems, so staying on top of those makes the transition much smoother.

A smart move is to map out a balanced first-semester schedule instead of trying to prove something with all hard classes at once. Give yourself time to adjust to reading-heavy courses, discussion-based classes, and the pace of college deadlines. Many students do better when they mix one or two demanding classes with a few that are manageable and genuinely interesting.

Before arriving, get familiar with the resources you’re likely to use early. That includes your academic advising setup, office hours, library spaces, tutoring or academic support, and student health resources. At UVA, it’s also worth learning the layout of Grounds, especially where your dorm, dining hall, main classroom buildings, and the libraries are, because that makes the first week much less stressful.

Socially, the best advice is to say yes often at first, but not permanently. Go to dorm events, try a few student org meetings, and talk to the people around you in your hall and classes. UVA has a strong student organization culture, and many friendships start in the first few weeks through clubs, residence halls, and shared routines rather than instant best-friend moments.

One more practical tip: handle the life stuff before it becomes a problem. Learn how to do laundry, manage a calendar, keep track of deadlines, and budget your spending money.
