Is UVA Early Decision generally less selective than Dartmouth Early Decision?

The biggest practical difference is that UVA’s Early Decision pool is split by Virginia residency and is heavily shaped by the university’s public mission, while Dartmouth’s Early Decision pool is a single, nationally and internationally competitive private-college pool. A Virginia resident with a strong record may find UVA ED meaningfully more attainable than Dartmouth ED. For out-of-state applicants, UVA ED remains very selective, but Dartmouth ED is still typically the tougher admit.

Dartmouth receives applications from students seeking admission to one of the most selective Ivy-level undergraduate programs, and its early round includes many applicants with exceptional grades, coursework, recommendations, and extracurricular depth. Early Decision can improve an applicant’s odds at Dartmouth relative to Regular Decision, but it does not make Dartmouth an easy early option.

UVA ED is also binding and highly competitive, especially for nonresidents. However, UVA enrolls a substantial share of Virginia residents and evaluates applicants in the context of residency, which makes it important not to treat UVA’s overall early-round results as identical for every applicant. A well-qualified in-state applicant is in a distinctly different position from an equally qualified out-of-state applicant.

The best early choice should be the school you would be prepared to attend under the binding commitment, after reviewing affordability and academic fit.
