Is UVA or Syracuse More Selective for College Admissions?

The University of Virginia is substantially more selective overall than Syracuse University, especially for applicants from outside Virginia. UVA receives an exceptionally large volume of applications for a limited class and evaluates applicants in a highly competitive academic pool. Its in-state admission process is also competitive, though Virginia residency provides a meaningful advantage because UVA is a public university with a state enrollment mission.

UVA tends to fit applicants with a very rigorous high school curriculum, consistently top grades relative to their school context, and clear evidence of intellectual engagement and contribution beyond the classroom. Being “within range” academically does not make admission predictable, particularly for out-of-state students.

Syracuse is selective, but its admissions landscape is less restrictive than UVA’s. It can be an appealing option for students whose strengths align closely with a particular school or program, such as Newhouse, architecture, visual and performing arts, business, or communications.

For application planning, treat UVA as a reach for most applicants, including many highly qualified students. Syracuse may be a target or reach depending on your academic record, intended program, and whether you need substantial financial aid.
