Is UVA or Wesleyan more selective overall?

I’m trying to compare these two schools while making my college list, and I keep seeing different opinions on which one is harder to get into.

I know both are selective, but I want a simple comparison of how selective they are overall for a typical applicant.

Wesleyan is more selective overall for a typical applicant. It has a smaller undergraduate population, receives a very large number of applications for its size, and operates in the highly competitive liberal arts college admissions lane. UVA is also very selective, but its in-state mandate makes the experience of selectivity look very different depending on where you live.

One major differentiator is residency. UVA is a public flagship and gives a clear admissions advantage to Virginia residents because it is required to enroll a large share of in-state students. For an in-state applicant, UVA can be more accessible than Wesleyan. For an out-of-state applicant, though, UVA becomes much tougher, and that is why people often give conflicting answers when comparing the two.

Another difference is applicant pool structure. Wesleyan reviews a self-selected pool applying to a small private liberal arts college, so the average applicant is often very intentionally targeting selective private schools. UVA draws a broader mix, including many in-state students across Virginia as well as a large national out-of-state pool, which makes its overall selectivity less uniform.

If you want one simple overall label, Wesleyan is the harder admit. The main caveat is that a Virginia resident may find UVA comparatively more attainable, while a nonresident could experience UVA as roughly as hard or even harder in some cases.
