How do I self-report grades to Virginia Tech on the application?

I'm applying to Virginia Tech and keep seeing references to self-reported grades. I’m not sure what information they want entered and how detailed it needs to be.

I want to make sure I’m reporting my classes and grades correctly so I don’t make a mistake on the application.

For Virginia Tech, you self-report your coursework and grades directly in the application rather than sending an official transcript upfront for review. They want a fairly detailed academic record, usually including each high school course you took, the level of the course such as standard, honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment, and the final grade earned. The goal is to match your high school transcript as closely as possible, so accuracy matters more than trying to reformat anything.

In practice, enter your classes by academic year and use the course names exactly or almost exactly as they appear on your transcript. Report the grades in the format your school uses, whether that is letter grades, percentages, or another scale, and include both semester and final grades if the application specifically asks for them. If your school gives only final grades for a full-year class, report that rather than inventing semester marks.

You should also identify the rigor level correctly. For example, if a class is listed as AP Biology, mark it as AP, and if it is a community college course taken through your high school, mark it as dual enrollment if that option appears. Do not weight or recalculate your grades yourself unless Virginia Tech explicitly instructs you to do so.

The safest approach is to sit with your transcript while filling it out and copy everything carefully, including course titles, grades, and school years. If you are currently taking senior-year classes, list them as in progress if the application asks for current courses.
