How should I choose a teacher recommendation for Virginia Tech?

I'm applying to Virginia Tech and need to decide which teacher to ask for a recommendation. I have a couple of teachers who know me well, but they taught me in different subjects and classes.

I want to make the best choice for my application and make sure the recommendation actually helps my chances.

Choose the teacher who can write the most specific, enthusiastic letter about how you learn, contribute in class, and handle challenge. The best letter usually comes from a junior or senior year teacher in a core academic class who has seen your work ethic, curiosity, and character up close.

If one teacher taught you in a subject related to your intended major and knows you well, that is often the strongest option. For example, if you are applying for engineering, a math or science teacher who can describe your problem-solving and persistence may fit especially well. But a detailed letter from an English or history teacher is better than a generic letter from a STEM teacher who barely knows you.

The strongest letters include concrete observations like how you led a lab group, improved after feedback, asked unusually thoughtful questions, or supported classmates.

A good way to decide is to ask yourself which teacher could answer these questions most convincingly: What kind of student are you day to day? How do you respond when work gets difficult? What do you add to the class community? If one teacher can give specific stories and another would mostly repeat your transcript, choose the one with stories.

Before asking, check whether the teacher has time to write a strong letter. When you ask, say you are applying to Virginia Tech, mention your intended major, and ask whether they feel they can write you a strong recommendation. That wording gives them room to be honest and usually leads to a better outcome.
