What is the first-year experience like at Amherst College?

I’m a high school senior looking at Amherst, and I keep seeing people mention how strong the first-year experience is there.

I’m trying to understand what freshman year is actually like in terms of academics, advising, and campus life so I can tell whether the environment would be a good fit for me.

Amherst’s first-year experience is generally very strong if you want a small, discussion-heavy liberal arts environment with a lot of support and flexibility. First-year students start with a dedicated orientation, are matched with an academic advisor before arriving, and can explore broadly because Amherst has an open curriculum with no general education requirements. The campus is residential and close-knit, so freshmen are usually integrated into student life quickly rather than feeling like they are on the margins.

Academically, freshman year tends to be exploratory but rigorous. Amherst offers First-Year Seminars, which are small classes designed to build close faculty interaction and strong writing and discussion skills. Because there is no core curriculum, students can try courses across departments right away, but that freedom also means you need to be reasonably comfortable making choices without a preset path.

Advising is one of the better parts of the experience there. Incoming students are assigned a faculty advisor, and Amherst also has class deans and other support offices that help with academic planning, adjustment, and personal concerns. If you are undecided, that is normal at Amherst, and the advising structure is built to help first-years sample fields before committing to a major.

Campus life for freshmen is active but not overwhelmingly large. Almost all students live on campus, and Amherst’s residential setup helps first-years meet people quickly through dorms, orientation, clubs, and campus events. The social scene is more centered on campus organizations, performances, lectures, meals, and nearby Five College opportunities than on a big-university sports or Greek life culture.
