What are the best tips for an Amherst College interview?

I’m applying to Amherst and want to make a good impression in the interview. I know it is supposed to be conversational, but I am not sure how formal I should be or what kinds of things I should be ready to talk about.

I’m mainly trying to understand how to present myself well without sounding rehearsed.

For an Amherst College interview, aim for warm, thoughtful, and specific rather than overly polished. You do not need to be extremely formal, but you should be prepared, professional, and able to talk clearly about what matters to you.

A good baseline is business casual if it is virtual or in person, and a calm, friendly tone. You should be ready to discuss your academic interests, a few activities or commitments that genuinely matter to you, how you think, and what kind of community you want in college.

The best way to avoid sounding rehearsed is to prepare themes, not scripts. Have a few clear stories or examples in mind: a class discussion that changed your perspective, a project you pursued beyond requirements, an activity where you took initiative, or a moment that shows how you engage with other people. Keep each example concrete and short, then let the conversation develop naturally.

You should also be ready for basic questions like why Amherst, what you enjoy studying, what you do outside class, and what you hope to contribute to campus.

Ask a couple of thoughtful questions too. Good ones are about the interviewer’s Amherst experience, how students make use of the open curriculum, or how classroom and residential life connect. Avoid questions with easy website answers.

What usually makes the best impression is curiosity, self-awareness, and genuine engagement. Amherst is not looking for a performance. They want to see how you think, what you care about, and whether you would contribute thoughtfully to a community built around discussion, independence, and strong relationships.
