How do I write a strong George Mason waitlist update letter?

I was waitlisted at George Mason and I want to send an update letter that actually helps my application. Since decisions are already out, I’m trying to keep it focused on new information instead of repeating what was in my original application.

I have a few recent updates like grades, activities, and a new accomplishment, but I’m not sure what belongs in a waitlist letter or how long it should be.

A strong George Mason waitlist update letter should be short, specific, and centered on meaningful new information since you applied. Repeating your original application usually does not help, so your instinct to emphasize recent developments is the right one.

For George Mason, the most useful updates are academic and impact-based. Include improved grades, especially in core classes or rigorous courses, any new honors or leadership roles, major project results, notable service or work accomplishments, and anything that shows continued momentum.

A clear structure works best. Start by thanking the admissions office for keeping you under consideration and state that you remain very interested in attending George Mason. If it is true, you can say Mason is one of your top choices, but only say it if you mean it.

Then give your updates in a tight paragraph or two. Be concrete: “I earned straight As this semester, including in AP Calculus and AP Literature,” is much stronger than “my grades improved.” If you won an award or led something, explain the scale or outcome in one sentence.

End with 1 short paragraph connecting your recent growth to George Mason specifically. Mention programs, opportunities, or values that genuinely fit you, such as Mason’s strong internships and DC-area access, undergraduate research, or a particular major, school, or learning environment that matches your goals. Keep this tailored and factual, not generic praise.

Do not send a long essay, rehash your personal statement, or add minor updates just to fill space.
