What are the best admission tips for George Mason business school?

I’m a high school junior looking at George Mason and I’m especially interested in business. I know the application is more than just grades, but I’m not sure what parts matter most for getting into the business school.

I’d like to understand what admissions officers usually look for in strong business applicants and what I should focus on most in high school.

For George Mason’s business program, the strongest applicants usually show solid academic preparation, clear interest in business, and evidence that they take initiative outside the classroom. For a business-focused applicant, admissions readers will pay close attention to grades in math, English, and any economics, statistics, accounting, or business-related classes available at your school.

The best thing to focus on in high school is building a consistent record rather than trying to collect random business activities. Take the most challenging courses you can handle, especially in math through at least Algebra II and preferably beyond, because business majors often start with quantitative coursework. Strong grades over time will usually help more than one flashy club title.

For extracurriculars, showing interest in business through concrete involvement such as DECA, FBLA, student government, managing a fundraiser budget, working a part-time job, helping with a family business, or starting a small project where you solved a real problem. Admissions officers tend to respond well to activities that show leadership, responsibility, communication, and follow-through.

Your essay should connect your interests to what you have actually done. A stronger approach is explaining a specific experience that got you interested in business, like organizing sales for a club event or noticing how a workplace operated, instead of just saying you want to major in business because you like leadership. Keep it specific and grounded in action.

If you apply test-optional, make sure the rest of the application is especially strong. If you do submit scores, they should add something positive rather than just fill a blank. Recommendation letters, when included, are most useful if they come from teachers who can speak to your work ethic, quantitative ability, or leadership in class.

If you are applying directly to the School of Business, showing both academic readiness and practical curiosity is the best strategy. Mason is a large public university with strong connections to the Northern Virginia and D.C. region, so applicants who come across as engaged, motivated, and ready to use those opportunities tend to make the best fit.
