Who should write George Mason recommendation letters for college application?

I’m getting ready to apply to George Mason and I’m trying to figure out who would be the best people to ask for recommendations. I want to make sure I choose teachers or counselors who actually know me well and can speak to my strengths in a meaningful way.

I’m mainly trying to understand what kind of recommenders are usually considered strongest for this school and application process.

For George Mason, the strongest recommendation letters usually come from core academic teachers who know your work well, especially from junior or senior year. A school counselor recommendation can also help, particularly if they can explain your academic context, course rigor, or personal circumstances. The best choice is not the teacher with the fanciest title, but the one who can give specific examples of your curiosity, improvement, work ethic, and classroom impact.

If you are applying to a program tied closely to a subject, a teacher in that area can be especially useful.

For example, if you are applying for engineering or computer science, a math or science teacher who can speak to your problem-solving and persistence would make sense. If you are applying in humanities, a teacher who can comment on your writing, discussion skills, or analytical thinking may be a better fit.

A counselor letter is most helpful when your counselor knows you beyond basic scheduling and can explain things like an upward grade trend, family responsibilities, school involvement, or limited access to advanced courses. If your counselor does not know you well, teacher letters usually carry more value.

Avoid choosing recommenders just because you got an A if they barely know you. Choose people who can write concretely about how you participate, respond to challenges, help classmates, or grow over time.
