What AP or IB course strategy does George Mason prefer for college applicants?

I'm trying to plan my junior and senior year courses and I want to make sure I'm challenging myself in a way that fits George Mason’s admissions expectations. My school offers both AP and IB classes, and I’m not sure whether one is viewed more favorably than the other.

I’d like to understand what kind of course rigor matters most for George Mason applicants.

George Mason does not prefer AP over IB. For admission, they care most that you take a rigorous schedule in the context of what your high school offers, and both AP and IB are viewed as strong college-level options. A full IB Diploma, individual IB Higher Level courses, and solid AP coursework can all demonstrate academic challenge.

What matters most is that your transcript shows strength in the five core academic areas: English, math, laboratory science, social science, and world language. Mason reviews students holistically, but course rigor is an important part of that review, especially in junior and senior year. They want to see that you did not avoid challenging classes if advanced options were available to you.

A good strategy is to choose the path you can do well in rather than trying to stack every possible advanced course. If your school has a strong IB program and you are a good fit for its structure, IB is absolutely respected. If AP lets you build a stronger schedule in the subjects that match your interests and strengths, that works just as well.

In practice, a balanced schedule with several advanced courses in core subjects is better than taking the hardest possible lineup and letting grades drop sharply. For example, taking AP or IB English, math, science, and history over junior and senior year is usually a stronger signal than loading up on electives with fewer core classes.
