What research opportunities are available for Johns Hopkins undergraduates?

I’m a high school junior starting to look at colleges where I could get involved in research as an undergrad, and Johns Hopkins keeps coming up for that. I’ve seen that it has a strong research reputation, but I’m not sure what kinds of opportunities students actually have once they’re there.

I’m mainly trying to understand what research access looks like for undergraduates at Johns Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins is one of the strongest undergraduate research environments in the country, and the opportunities are unusually broad. Undergrads can work directly in faculty labs, join independent projects, or get funded through programs that support research during the academic year and over the summer. Because Hopkins is a major research university, there are options across medicine, public health, engineering, the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences.

A big advantage is access to the university’s research ecosystem. Many students work with researchers at the Homewood campus, the medical school, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and other Hopkins divisions, so you are not limited to one department. Hopkins also has structured support for undergrads, including the Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship and summer research funding through the university, which can help students get started even if they do not already have a lab connection.

For STEM students, lab-based research is especially common, but humanities and social science students also do serious independent work, archival research, and faculty-mentored projects. The key point is that Hopkins does not treat research as something reserved for graduate students. Undergraduates are expected to participate, and many students begin as early as first year or sophomore year if they are proactive about contacting faculty and using campus research listings.

If you are asking about access, the short answer is that Hopkins offers a lot, but students usually need to be self-directed.
