What extracurriculars help most for CU Boulder admissions?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out what kinds of activities matter most for CU Boulder. I know colleges look at more than just grades, but I’m not sure whether they value leadership, community service, sports, clubs, or something else more.

I want to focus my time on the activities that would make the strongest impression if I apply there.

For CU Boulder, the extracurriculars that help most are the ones that show sustained commitment, initiative, and genuine impact rather than a specific “type” of activity. They do not have a secret preference for sports over clubs or service over leadership. What matters most is that your activities help tell a clear story about who you are and what you contribute. CU Boulder reviews applicants holistically, and your course rigor and grades still matter most, but activities can strengthen your application when they show depth and momentum.

The strongest activities are usually the ones where you’ve stuck with something over time and taken on real responsibility. That could be captaincy or leadership in a sport, leading a club, building something outside school, mentoring younger students, working a job, or doing meaningful community service. CU Boulder also has a strong reputation in areas like engineering, business, environmental studies, music, and research, so activities connected to your academic interests can be especially compelling if they show skill and curiosity.

If you want to make the best impression, focus less on collecting a long list and more on building a few activities where you can clearly point to growth, leadership, or impact. For example, starting a tutoring effort that actually serves students, running a project in a STEM club, or taking a part-time job and showing responsibility over time can all stand out if they are genuine and sustained.
