How do I write a strong college waitlist update letter?

I was waitlisted by one of my top-choice colleges, and I want to send an update that actually helps instead of just repeating my application. Since my original application, I’ve had a few new grades, activities, and accomplishments worth sharing.

I’m trying to figure out how to make the update concise and relevant while still sounding genuine.

A strong waitlist update letter should be short, specific, and genuinely new. The goal is to tell the college what has changed since you applied, why those updates matter, and that the school is still your top choice if that’s true.

Lead with a clear statement of continued interest, then share only the most meaningful updates. Good updates usually include new grades, awards, leadership roles, research, publications, performances, or a major project, especially if they show growth or impact. If you have several items, choose the ones that best strengthen your academic profile or add a new dimension to your application.

Keep the tone focused and professional. Instead of rehashing your whole story, connect each update to something concrete, like a higher GPA, a more advanced responsibility in an activity, or a measurable achievement. For example, “Since submitting my application, I earned an A in AP Biology and was selected to lead our school’s peer tutoring program” is much stronger than a long paragraph listing everything you’ve done.

It also helps to mention any new information the college would not already know, such as a final semester grade trend, a state-level competition result, or a significant leadership change. One page or less is usually plenty.
