What is freshman campus life like at Columbia University?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out whether I’d be happy at a school in the middle of a big city. Columbia sounds exciting, but I can’t tell from the website what day-to-day life actually feels like for first-year students.

I’m especially wondering what the social atmosphere, dorm experience, and sense of community are like when you’re new and still adjusting.

Freshman life at Columbia usually feels like a mix of close-knit campus routines and constant access to New York City.

Socially, Columbia can feel busy, ambitious, and high-energy, but not in a way that means everyone is doing the same thing. A lot of first-year friendships form through dorm floors, orientation groups, classes, cultural organizations, performing arts, publications, and identity-based communities. Because the Core Curriculum puts many students in shared classes early on, there is also a built-in way to meet people and have common experiences.

The dorm experience for first-years is usually more traditional than people expect from an urban school.

What often surprises students is that Columbia does not feel like you are being dropped into the entire city alone on day one. The campus has a real boundary and rhythm, and many freshmen spend a lot of time on campus before branching out into the city more confidently. At the same time, being in New York means spontaneous off-campus meals, internships, museums, concerts, and neighborhood exploration can become part of normal life pretty quickly.

The adjustment can be intense because Columbia students are often very driven, and the academic pace is real. But for many first-years, that intensity is balanced by a strong residential setup and lots of organized ways to meet people.
