Do online summer community college classes count as college coursework on applications?

I'm a high school junior thinking about taking an online class at my local community college over the summer to get ahead and explore a subject I'm interested in.

I'm confused about whether colleges treat that as official college coursework when I apply, or if it just gets listed as a high school enrichment thing.

Yes. If you enroll through the community college and earn credit on a real college transcript, colleges generally consider it college coursework on applications, even if you took it online during high school. It is usually not just an enrichment activity.

What matters is whether the class is transcripted for college credit, not whether it was online or taken in the summer. If it appears on an official community college transcript, you should expect to report it.

One important detail is high school versus college credit. A class can count as college coursework on applications even if your high school does not give you high school credit for it. Separately, whether the credit transfers or fulfills requirements at the college you eventually attend depends on that college’s policies.

If you want to be safe, think of it this way: if you registered as a college student and would be able to request an official transcript from the community college, report it as college coursework.
