How strong is Duke Kunshan University's Global Health major for students who want to go into public health or medicine later?

I’m looking at Duke Kunshan and the Global Health major stood out to me, but I’m not sure how it is viewed compared to a more traditional biology or public health path.

I’m interested in health-related careers and possibly med school later, so I’m trying to understand whether this major gives solid preparation or if it’s better for a different kind of career route.

Duke Kunshan’s Global Health major is a strong option if you are interested in public health, health policy, epidemiology, community health, or medicine with an international or population-health lens. It is not the same as a traditional pre-med biology major, but it can absolutely prepare you for med school if you plan your science coursework carefully. The biggest strength is that the program is built around health as a global, interdisciplinary issue, which fits well for students who want to understand health systems, inequity, disease patterns, and policy alongside science.

For medicine, the key question is not whether the major is respected, but whether you complete the prerequisite courses required by medical schools. In other words, Global Health can work very well for pre-med, but only if you treat it as Global Health plus pre-med requirements, not Global Health alone.

If your main goal is public health, global health research, NGOs, health consulting, or policy, this major may actually be more directly aligned than biology. If your main goal is a very science-heavy path and you want the simplest route to med school prerequisites, biology can be more straightforward.
